The Faculty of Arts, University of Ibadan, on Tuesday played host to a gathering of intellectuals and media personalities as Dr. Charles Akinsete launched his latest literary work, ‘Broken Dreams On Lofty Hills’
The event, which was held at Room 32 of the Faculty, was a celebration of Dr. Akinsete’s contributions to the literary world.
The Managing Director and Editor-in-Chief of Tribune Newspapers, Mr. Edward Dickson led a delegation of top media executives, including the General Editor, Mr. Taiwo Adisa, and Editor, Saturday Tribune, Mr. Lasisi Olagunju.
Also, in attendance were erudite professors and academics from the University of Ibadan and other institutions.
In his remarks, Mr. Edward Dickson commended Dr. Akinsete’s efforts, stating that his intellectual work would go places. He encouraged students of the English Department to work hard in their academic pursuit, reminding them that everyone has their days of little beginnings.
“Everyone of us had our days of little beginnings. Dr. Charles had his, and you students also have yours. When he used to be with us, he never disappointed Tribune. This is a book that is going somewhere to happen on the world stage.
“So, let us be prepared. I am here to celebrate with Dr. Akinsete and wish him well, and to also let you know that he has a strong family at the Tribune House,” he stated.
The General Editor of the Nigerian Tribune, Mr. Taiwo Adisa, who chaired the event, appreciated Dr. Akinsete’s commitment and dedication to producing the great work. Adisa described Akinsete as a hardworking and steadfast individual.
“Today, I need to appreciate Akinsete for this great work. I know him as a very committed and hardworking individual because he has worked under me before.
He told the students to remain focused on their studies and emulate the likes of Akinsete.
“This (Room 32) used to be the starting point. This school is the best not just in Nigeria but across the world. Remain steadfast,” Adisa said.
Earlier in his opening remark, the Dean of Arts, Professor…Oyetade, noted that Dr Akinsete has joined the league of those projecting the image of the Department of English, the Faculty of Arts and the institution at large in good light.
“You have done us proud. It is my hope that this novel will receive global recognition like that of Chinua Achebe and other great writers.” he stated.
Dr. Charles Akinsete, a lecturer at the Department of English, University of Ibadan, has written two poetry collections, including Do Not Preach to Me and Dance of the Savage Kingdom, which was shortlisted for the 2023 ANA prize for Poetry.
His latest book is a testament to his dedication to the literary arts and his commitment to contributing meaningfully to the literary world.
He expressed gratitude to the attendees for their support and encouragement, acknowledging the significance of their presence at the launch.
