The Executive Chairman of Oyo East local government area of Oyo State, Hon. Saheed Arowosaye, on Thursday, reacted to the misconceptions circulating regarding the revocation of shop allocations to new owners and the provision of electricity within the market.

Arosad, who gave a clear position during his interaction with journalists on the two major issues, stated that the Council reallocated the shops to new owners because the applicants, who were originally awarded the shops four years ago, refused to pay up to secure full ownership.

He lamented that despite the Council’s demonstration of considerable leniency by patiently waiting for the payment for four years, even far beyond the initial agreement, the applicants failed to honor agreement.

The Council Chairman added that during the period of waiting for the individuals, multiple notices were pasted on the doors of the shops, reminding them of their payment obligations but, regrettably, payments were not made.

In his words: “Today, I visited the Akesan Market as part of our ongoing efforts to communicate transparently and address some concerns directly with our people.

“It has come to our attention that there have been some misconceptions circulating regarding the revocation of shop allocations and the provision of electricity within the market.

“So, I wish to provide clarifications on these matters here to ensure the public has accurate information.

“In 2020, successful applicants were awarded shop allocations at Akesan Market, with the condition stipulated in the offer letters that full payment was required within five working days to secure full ownership.

“The local government demonstrated considerable leniency by patiently waiting for the payment for four years, far beyond the initial agreement.

“During this time, multiple notices were pasted on the doors of the shops, reminding the owners of their payment obligations. Regrettably, the payments were not made and, following due process, the shops were reallocated to new owners. I assure you that this action was taken in full compliance with due process and official records validating these proceedings are readily available.”

While addressing the aspect of provision of power to the shops, he pointedly stated that the Council had already fulfilled its obligations regarding the major electrical infrastructure.

He maintained that the responsibility of connecting electricity from the poles to individual shops now rests with the shop owners, in collaboration with the IBEDC.

Arowosaye quipped: “Regarding the electrification of Akesan Market, it is important to clarify that the installation of a new transformer and the connection to the electricity grid were integral parts of the initial market reconstruction contract.

“The transformer was duly purchased and energized by the Ibadan Electricity Distribution Company and a central bulk metre was installed.

“The responsibility of connecting the electricity from the poles to individual shops rests with the shop owners, in collaboration with the Ibadan Electricity Distribution Company.

“The Oyo East Local Government has fulfilled its obligations concerning the major electrical infrastructure.”

In conclusion, he reiterated his administration will continue to be committed to fostering an environment of trust and accountability, urging members of the public to seek further clarification on issues of public interest when in doubt.
