The Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Dr Lekan Balogun, Alli Okunmade II, is planning to confer a chieftancy title on the presidential candidate of the People’s Democratic Party, PDP, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, NewsBreakNG has learnt.
A source hinted this medium that the title Olubadan is considering to confer on Atiku is Aare Akogun of Ibadanland, but against the wish of some personalities in the All Progressives Party, APC, who are close to the Olubadan.
“Olubadan’s brothers and others are allegedly putting pressure on him not to go ahead because they are APC while Atiku is of the PDP,” the source said.
NewsBreakNG also learnt that some forces within the APC, who are not also close to the Palace are allegedly plotting to derail the conferment of the Honorary title on Atiku.
The source added: “A few months ago, an honorary chieftaincy title was given to Ganduje and that was okay then. But now that Atiku is the recipient of an honorary chieftaincy, the same people that drove the Ganduje chieftaincy project are screaming about the Palace appearing partisan.
Tinubu has been conferred with several titles by other traditional rulers and there were no issues.”
It was also learnt that the moves by the opposition was what called for the recent announcement by the Olubadan Advisory Council to suspend conferment of honorary chieftaincy titles on deserving personalities till further notice.
NewsBreakNG recalls that only a few months ago, an honorary chieftaincy title of Aare Fiwajoye and Yeye Aare Fiwajoye of Ibadanland was conferred on the Kano state governor and his wife, Dr. Abdullahi Ganduje and Professor Hafsatu Ganduje by Olubadan.
Deserving Nigerians, eminent personalities across the country, who have identified with Ibadan in particular and Yorubaland in general, are entitled to such honour, irrespective of their religion, political affiliation, creed or race.
The source, while noting that attempts by certain quarters to politicise the conferment of such honorary titles to deserving personities is a matter for great concern, lamented the involvement of politicians in traditional matters.
