In a recent speech by the Minister of Finance, plans were unveiled for the establishment of a Social Security unemployment programme, along with the direct payment of atleast ₦25,000 to approximately 12 million households, impacting roughly 60 million Nigerians. While on the surface, this may seem like a well-intentioned move, there are grave concerns that these funds will be hijacked and the impact on the populace will be minimal, given the current economic realities.Aside from being hijacked, it is a waste of resources.
The proposed direct payment of ₦25,000 per household raises serious questions about its effectiveness. In today’s market, ₦8,300 can barely provide three square meal, let alone sustain a family for any meaningful period. We implore the President to reconsider this approach and instead redirect the estimated ₦300 billion that will be earmarked for this programme over the next three months if they are to use the statistics given, towards more impactful initiatives.
The heart of the matter lies in the need for sustainable solutions to unemployment and poverty in Nigeria. Rather than introducing short-term fixes that may breed dependency, we advocate for programmes that empower youths to be self-employed. One such example is the Youth Enterprise with Innovation in Nigeria (YouWin) programme initiated during President Jonathan’s tenure, which has seen many youths thriving in their businesses years after the programme’s launch.
It is crucial for the President to surround himself with a diverse group of technocrats, not just the same known faces. These technocrats should have a deep understanding of the challenges faced by ordinary Nigerians, as they actively engage with them. The disconnect between the leadership and the populace, exemplified by the inability of certain individuals to relate to the everyday struggles of Nigerians, is a major hindrance to progress.
The call to action emphasizes the need for the government to consult with a diverse group of technocrats and experts who have a deep understanding of the challenges faced by ordinary Nigerians. It is argued that relying solely on the advice of the wealthy or disconnected individuals may lead to solutions that do not adequately address the realities on the ground.
While the intentions behind the government’s proposed programs may be noble, there is a growing consensus that a more thoughtful and sustainable approach is needed. By prioritizing initiatives that empower individuals and communities, Nigeria can move towards a future where all its citizens have the opportunity to thrive.

We need to emphasize the importance of including individuals who are not part of the elite class and who are actively engaged in everyday activities such as market shopping, fueling their cars, and paying school fees, to provide a more realistic perspective on the issues at hand.
In conclusion, the proposed Social Security and Unemployment Programme, as currently outlined, falls short of addressing the root causes of poverty and unemployment in Nigeria. It is imperative that our leaders adopt a more holistic approach, one that prioritizes empowerment over handouts and seeks to bridge the gap between the privileged few and the majority.
